Widow's Might Moment

I hope all of you have watched The Widow's Might by John Moore at least once.  It is a great movie!  It is family friendly, a musical, a drama, and a western all wrapped into one.  If you haven't seen it, you need too!

The premise of the movie is two friends and their families championing a local widow in their small Texas town.  As she is losing her home to property taxes, these two modern day cowboy heroes decide to tell her story to the people, by way of film.  As aspiring filmmakers, John and Cameron have just advanced into the next rank of the local film festival, and find their dreams and duties knocking against each other.  Together, the two families face opposition from the press and fight against the injustice of our tax system, all through the dramatic story of a western frontier story.

In one of the last scenes, they are presenting their film to the townspeople and the mood of the people is swinging in their favor.  Enraged, the corrupt news reporter sabotages their sound system cutting off the last, crucial moments of the film.   Faced with this obstruction, Cameron racks his brain and comes up with one, challenging solution.  They'll act it out.  They'll sing it.  Live on the stage and bring the show to a close.

It turns out fine in the Widow's Might and it turned out fine at the 2012 Plants and Pillars Film Festival.

Thirty minutes before showtime, the sound cord snapped off inside the computer.  As my dad tried solution after solution with no success, and it seemed like the Lord was closing door after door, we started wondering: "what is the Lord doing here?"  As I felt tears welling up and I saw my dad trying in vain, totally stressed, to bring it together, I was calling, "Lord, what are you doing?"

We're we going to relive The Widow's Might?

Six minutes after the scheduled start time, 2 stripped cords, a hotwired cord, and a friend's laptop later, we were up and running.  The Lord reminded me, "Just when you think you have it under control, you don't.  Just when you think you know all there is to know, you don't.  Just when you think you don't need me, you do."

Granted, I had not spent the day telling God to get out of my life.  In fact, I had spent the thirty minutes before we left praying on my knees for his blessing.  But, God loves reality checks.

"You do need me, and don't forget it!"

About a year ago, our film group held a film showing at a church. I burned all of the film shorts on a DVD and showed up 30 minutes before it was supposed to start. However, when the dvd was inserted to play, there was no audio, so we spent the next 20 stressful minutes trying to get the audio to work. By the time everyone was seated we decided to have everyone move to a much smaller room in the church. It didn't turn out as nice as we hoped, but we were able to go through the entire evening without any more technical difficulties. God always is in control, we just have to realize that what we want may not be part of God's grand plan. :)

Thank you Joshua. As I told everyone at the Festival, you spend your first year stressed out about the sound and video... and nothing happens. Then the third year, you don't worry... and you lose audio!

I hope your internship with the film company has gone well this summer!
