Day 30: A motto or philosophy

My motto from the Bible:

“With what shall I come before the Lord,
and bow myself before God on high?
Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,
with calves a year old?
7 Will the Lord be pleased witha thousands of rams,
with ten thousands of rivers of oil?
Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?”

8 He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,b
and to walk humbly with your God?

 My personal motto:

Safety in Numbers
Power in Togetherness!

Day 29: Hopes, dreams and plans you have for the next 365 days

Hmmm... well there are a lot, but here are the main ones

  • To graduate from highschool - proud of the work I did in 12 years
  • To create and host the 3rd Plants and Pillars Film Festival
  • To get the Store of Plants and Pillars running and operating
  • To finish another year of violin - and feel good about what I learned.
  • To pursue my love of children and prepare to work with my own one day
  • To read through the Bible several times.  (it can be done and I intend to do it!)
  • To read 300 books.  (100 was NOT a challenge)
  • To prepare to be a loving wife
  • To honor the Lord in everything I do
  • To spend quality time making memories with my parents and siblings!
There you have it!!!  :)

Day 28: A scar you have and it's story.

I have a scar on the outside of my right pinky finger.  And that story is funny... but painful at the time.

When I was 9 and Rachel was 7, we were playing in the basement of our old house.  We had gotten kind of silly... shocking I know... and were having a ton of fun.  Rachel picked up a pair of scissors and open and shut them at me!!!  I asked her to stop and she did and turned around.  I then snuck up behind her and tickled her.  Little did I know that she still had the scissors open and she ripped them through my finger.  I didn't get stiches, but I probably needed them.  That scar is probably my most obvious.

And that is my story.

Farewell!

Day 27: A physical feature you love.

Eyes.

Not just the colors that they come in.  Although, the different shades of green, blue, and brown are lovely.  I'm green eyed, as are most of my family.  Two of them have brilliant blue eyes.  The others have a marbled look.  Not quite green and not quite blue.

I've heard eyes called the window to a soul.  And that's quite true.  They express emotions.  Love, fear, caring, indifference.

I always try to take off my sunglasses to talk to someone.  I tell others to do the same.  Maybe it's selfish, but I like knowing if they're really looking at me.  Really listening to me.  Eyes do that better than any other feature.

So there you have it.  Now you know.  Take off your sunglasses when you talk to me!!!

6 Months

Time flies.  Happy or sad, mournful or singing.  Time flies.

That is how God made it, but still at times I wish I could grab hold of a moment and savor it.  Drink it in for longer.  Smile and laugh just a little bit longer.  Laugh out loud til you can't laugh anymore.  Feel the sun on your face and the wind in your hair.

There are other moments that are so happy, I wish I could remember them better.  What was it that made me laugh so hard?  Why did I smile?  Who hugged me then?

There are still others that, while painful, I want to remember.  They are still precious even though they are painful.  They hold lessons.  Lessons of spiritual growth.  Lessons of emotions shared.  Thoughts shared.  The memory of a tear running down my cheek.

Because at certain times, you realize that now it is time to weep with those who weep.  And then to rejoice with those who rejoice.

To the families who lost homes or loved ones on April 27, 2011.  We are thinking of you on this 6 month anniversary.  Especially to our friends in the Valley.  We love you guys.

Day 26: A childhood memory.

A childhood memory I have is playing at my grandfather's farm.  He lived on 100 acres (I think) and we would run through the fields, run through the woods, track deer, listen to turkeys, and catch fish.

Also on his property was a little house that he had sold and then bought back (my grandfather was anything if not interesting), so we could go down there and "live".  With running water in a completely furnished house we played Little House on the Prairie.  We saw herds of deer run by the window.  We got attacked by some geese and and we ran over fields of green grass.

My only regret is that my little siblings can't experience that feeling of freedom and adventure.  I tell them the stories and they don't quite believe me.  It seems to good to be true.

Maybe it is.

Then again... maybe not.

Day 25: A recipe.

A Recipe for Preserving a Husband

Be careful in your selection. Do not choose too young. When selected, give your entire thoughts to preparation for domestic use. Some wives insist upon keeping them in a pickle, others are constantly getting them into hot water. This may make them sour, hard, and sometimes bitter. Even poor varieties may be made sweet, warm, and tender and with kisses, wrap them in a mantle of charity. Keep warm with a steady fire of domestic devotion and serve with peaches and cream. Thus prepared they will keep for years.

Day 24: A movie no one would expect you to love.

Hmmm... I think Tangled.  I LOVE that movie.  The jokes, the funny lines, the MUSIC!!!!  The music is AWESOME!!!!   :)

Did anyone expect me to love Tangled?

Sunday, October 23, 2011

Day 23: A way in which you want to be remembered.

I want to be remembered as...

Someone who laughed, but could cry with a friend.

Someone who would willingly hug a lost and afraid soul

Someone who smiled and still let a tear run down her cheek for a hurting person

Someone who held babies and talked to the "little ones"

Someone who loved unconditionally and gave it all.

Someone who loved deeply and never ran out of love.

Someone who reflects the love of my Savior in all I do, think, say, and feel.  That's what I want to be remembered as.

Day 22: A website.

My website!!!  Plants and Pillars

Which, reminds me!  At the beginning of November, Plants and Pillars will be republished with a new look!!!!  The new features will include:
  •  New Film Festival information
  • 4 new blogs
  • A store
  • New book reviews
  • New "bios" on the family
  • and much more!
So, go see P&P now, before it's gone!  (well actually just changes)

Day 21: Something you know you do differently than most people

Something I do differently than most people is....

I'll ask my mom!

Mommy, when you read this, can you tell me what I do differently than most people?

I'll let y'all know!!! :)

Day 20: A hobby of yours

Didn't I just do this? Oh no, that was a talent. Is reading a talent or a hobby? Hmm. Oh well!

Some hobbies I have are writing, filmmaking, web design, taking care of babies, and playing the violin.

Wednesday, October 19, 2011

Day 19: A talent of yours.

A talent of mine.

I read. I read a lot. This past year I set myself the goal of reading 100 books. I'm not to my one year mark and I am almost to 175 books. :) I REALLY like to read.

I read everything! But here are some favorite authors: Donita K. Paul, Douglas Bond, Chuck Black, Jannete Oke, Jan Karon, and Mr. and Mrs. Castleberry.

Day 18: A time when you felt passionate and alive

Hmmmm............................

A time I felt passionate and alive. Well...

I don't really have one. I'll ask my mom (she would know that kind of thing about me better than I know!) and get back with you. :)

Day 17: An art piece

Self Portrait by Norman Rockwell

Sunday, October 16, 2011

Day 16: A song that makes you cry.

I don't know if I have actually cried yet when I hear this song, but it brings tears to my eyes.

It reminds me so much of April 27, 2011.

Jesus draw me ever nearer

As I labor through the storm.
You have called me to this passage,
and I'll follow, though I'm worn.

May this journey bring a blessing,
May I rise on wings of faith;
And at the end of my heart's testing,
With Your likeness let me wake.

Jesus guide me through the tempest;
Keep my spirit staid and sure.
When the midnight meets the morning,
Let me love You even more.

Let the treasures of the trial
Form within me as I go -
And at the end of this long passage,
Let me leave them at Your throne.

Day 15: A person you admire.

Well, that would pretty much be my mother!!! She is pretty much one of the greatest people I know!!!!

But, since I said Mommy last time... I guess I should try someone new.

I also admire Anna C. from our church. She reminds me of my mom in a lot of ways, she's a second generation homeschooler, she's the oldest of 8, and she acts like she's the big sister I never had. Happily married to the man she loves with three kids, she is where I want to be when I'm 25.

Mommy and Anna are two wonderful Christian ladies, mothers, and wives.

Thank you for the examples you set daily, Mommy and Anna!

Friday, October 14, 2011

Day 14: A vacation you would like to take.

A tour of the East Coast.

  • Washington D.C
  • The Statue of Liberty
  • Monticello
  • Williamsburg
  • etc!

Thursday, October 13, 2011

Day 13: A guilty pleasure.

Uhh.... hmm.... well....

Doing my math!

No, not really!

Seriously, I guess I have guilty pleasure when I find a great book and I skip all my afternoon jobs to finish it. Like playing violin, editing, doing the website, and cleaning.

Fortunately that only happens rarely.

Okay fine, it happens a lot!!!!

Day 12: A song that you want played at your wedding.

Am I allowed to say, "When You Say Nothing At All" by Allison Krauss?

Maybe the Reception! :)

I guess, The Church's One Foundation.

Beautiful picture of Christ and His Bride.

Trapped in the Middle

She lay on my bed today.  Curled against me as I read.  She scratched my feet and tickled them.  And I thought.

She's seven years old.  A young lady.  An older girl.  Trapped between two worlds.  Is she older?  Or is she still a little girl.

Her mind is maturing.  Handling words and sentences.  She can think through a problem.  Her body is maturing.  She can run like the wind and climb as high as the sky.

And yet, she's still a baby.  She cries when she misses her Mommy.  She clings to her sisters like she'll never let go.  She laughs with the innocence of knowing nothing evil in the world.

She looks at her older sisters.  Can she handle what they handle?  Surely not.  One day she will.  But, until then... let her be free and sweet.

She needs more days to run barefoot through the grass and catch grasshoppers.  She needs more days to reach for the sun and feel it's out of grasp.  She needs more days to climb to the roof and sing to the sky. More days to run through the rain.  More days to curl up and sleep in the middle of the day.

She needs more days to run through the wind and laugh at the top of her lungs.

She needs more days to pretend she's 18.

She needs days of innocence.  Days of being responsibility free.  Days of no worry.

She know that sin is in the world.  She knows that sadness is lurking near.  But, she needs the ability to run and laugh trusting that she is safe, protected, and loved.

She knows that she has family.  A Mommy and a Daddy who would give their lives for her. And she know a baby was born in Bethlehem who died for her sins.

For now that is all she needs.  The knowledge.  One day all to soon, the little joys of a little girl will fade.  She'll love her family and her Lord.  But her faith will be tested.  The tears will flow freer.  More often.

Trust me.  I know.

Day 10: A photo of you taken over ten years ago.

Sunday, October 9, 2011

Day 9: A photo you took.

Saturday, October 8, 2011

Day 8: A thank you letter to someone who has changed your life.

Dear Siblings,

Thank you all for being who you are and what you are. I love every moment you live, every smile you have, and every tear that rolls down your face. The 7 of you touch my heart in a way that few people understand. That is what being siblings is all about.

I love when we talk so fast people don't know what we said, but we do. I love when we have private "sibling" jokes to laugh over.

We know each other's weaknesses and strong points. Some times we tear each other down, but we are quick to repair... mostly! :)

You all changed my life... again, and again, and again.

I love you all so much!

Love, Jessica

  1. My Bible
  2. My family (does that count as 10?)
  3. Books
  4. Paper and Pens (I count that as one because I only write with paper, I don't make paper airplanes so I have to have both)
  5. Sweet Tea!  I love it!  I'm Southern!

Wordless Wednesday...make that Thursday

A good reminder of what that night was like.

Day 6: A moment you wish you could relive.

The moment I knew that I had a second little brother.

We had decided to keep it a secret until the kids were able to visit the hospital.  Daddy wasn't supposed to tell us when he got home.  He was on the phone when he walked in the door and the first thing he said was.  "I don't know what we'll name him."  What??? !!!  I had a second little brother.

Note: Michael Joseph didn't get his name until he was almost 2 days old!  :)  We were expecting a girl!

Wednesday, October 5, 2011

Day 5: A favorite quote.

When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world.

George Washington Carver

Day 1: A favorite song.

Wow!  This is a hard one to start out on.  Mainly because I love music and I love to sing. (Note: that doesn't mean I do it well... but I love to sing)  I also love to play songs on my violin.

Erin always tells me that I know the words to the hymns and songs and she knows the tune.  Sad, but true!

So, here is my favorite SONG... because hymns are to hard to do.  How can you pick a favorite hymn?  I mean come on!!!

Okay, fine... I'll include one of my most favorite hymns!

Song: Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears

On the first day on January,
Eighteen ninety-two,
They opened Ellis Island and they let
The people through.
And the first to cross the treshold
Of that isle of hope and tears,
Was Annie Moore from Ireland
Who was all of fifteen years.

CHORUS:

Isle of hope, isle of tears,
Isle of freedom, isle of fears,
But it's not the isle you left behind.
That isle of hunger, isle of pain,
Isle you'll never see again
But the isle of home is always on your mind.

In a little bag she carried
All her past and history,
And her dreams for the future
In the land of liberty.
And courage is the passport
When your old world disappears
But there's no future in the past
When you're fifteen years

Chorus

When they closed down Ellis Island
In nineteen fourty-three,
Seventeen million people
Had come there for sanctuary.
And in Springtime when I came here
And I stepped onto it's piers,
I thought of how it must have been
When you're fifteen years.

Chorus

Hymn: It Is Well

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
Refrain
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.
Refrain
My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
Refrain
For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live:
If Jordan above me shall roll,
No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life
Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul.
Refrain
But, Lord, ‘tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait,
The sky, not the grave, is our goal;
Oh trump of the angel! Oh voice of the Lord!
Blessèd hope, blessèd rest of my soul!
Refrain
And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.
Refrain

This hymn was written after two major traumas in Spafford’s life. The first was the great Chicago Fire of October 1871, which ruined him financially (he had been a wealthy businessman). Shortly after, while crossing the Atlantic, all four of Spafford’s daughters died in a collision with another ship. Spafford’s wife Anna survived and sent him the now famous telegram, “Saved alone.” Several weeks later, as Spafford’s own ship passed near the spot where his daughters died, the Holy Spirit inspired these words. They speak to the eternal hope that all believers have, no matter what pain and grief befall them on earth.

Taken from Cyberhymnal

Well, see you tomorrow!
